Cover Story: An association of occlusal function with dementia has been reported, though the influence of age on that association is not well understood. Using community-dwelling older people in Japan, the associations of number of present teeth and occlusal status, assessed using functional tooth units, with clinically diagnosed dementia were examined. Furthermore, analyses of subgroups stratified by age were performed to examine its influence on those associations. The findings suggest that the risk of dementia is reduced in individuals with better occlusion, while the effect of occlusion is greater in younger aged older people. Therefore, the incorporation of both occlusal function maintenance and age into programs constructed for the prevention of dementia may be helpful. View this paper
