Cover Story: Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF) signaling has been shown to mediate a pro-inflammatory response in various chronic lung diseases such as cystic fibrosis (CF). In lungs affected by CF, colonization and recurrent infections with Pseudomonas aeruginosa have been shown to contribute to morbidity and mortality. We found that Pseudomonas aeruginosa can activate downstream targets of the FGF signaling pathway leading to increased secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines, but this was independent of FGF receptor signaling. Elucidating the upstream pathways of this phenomenon could lead to the identification of novel therapeutic targets to treat Pseudomonas lung infections in CF, a disease wherein current therapies still do not eradicate this pathogen.
