Metabolomics: Evaluating the Metabolic Profile of Biological Samples
Topic Information
Dear Colleagues,
Metabolic profiling of biological samples has become a central approach in contemporary biomedical and environmental research. By capturing coordinated changes in low-molecular-weight metabolites, metabolomics enables the evaluation of biochemical phenotypes in cells, tissues, and biofluids, providing biologically relevant information that bridges molecular perturbations and functional outcomes related to physiological regulation, environmental exposure, and disease-associated processes.
This article collection is dedicated to original research and critical reviews that apply metabolomics to the evaluation and interpretation of metabolic profiles of biological samples analyzed within experimental and clinical contexts. Emphasis is placed on studies that move beyond descriptive profiling to provide biological insight, comparative analysis across conditions, and mechanistic understanding.
Contributions addressing exposure- and disease-related metabolic signatures, mechanisms of toxicity, nutrition–health interactions, and human biomonitoring are particularly encouraged. The integration of metabolic profiling with advanced biological models, complementary omics approaches, and translational strategies is also within the scope of this collection.
By reinforcing the central role of biological samples in metabolomics research, this collection aims to support a more integrative and human-based use of metabolomics, strengthening its relevance for health-related research, risk assessment, and decision-making in complex biological systems.

Preprints.org is a multidisciplinary platform offering a preprint service designed to facilitate the early sharing of your research. It supports and empowers your research journey from the very beginning.
MDPI Topics is collaborating with Preprints.org and has established a direct connection between MDPI journals and the platform. Authors are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity by posting their preprints at Preprints.org prior to publication:
i. Share your research immediately: disseminate your ideas prior to publication and establish priority for your work.
ii. Safeguard your intellectual contribution: Protect your ideas with a time-stamped preprint that serves as proof of your research timeline.
iii. Boost visibility and impact: Increase the reach and influence of your research by making it accessible to a global audience.
iv. Gain early feedback: Receive valuable input and insights from peers before submitting to a journal.
v. Ensure broad indexing: Web of Science (Preprint Citation Index), Google Scholar, Crossref, SHARE, PrePubMed, Scilit and Europe PMC.
