Micro(nano)plastic Pollution under Climate Change: Ecotoxicity, Environmental Impacts and Mitigation Strategies

Dear Colleagues,
Humans rely extensively on plastics throughout their lifecycles owing to their superior physicochemical properties, low‑cost production and broad applicability. Over time, plastic debris degrades into pervasive microplastics (MPs)/nanoplastics, which exert biological hazards across trophic levels. Terrestrial soils accumulate micro(nano)plastics via multiple routes: groundwater infiltration, irrigation input and atmospheric deposition. Ongoing climate change reshapes particle ageing, migratory behavior and bioavailability within soil matrices. Associated contaminants, including antibiotics, heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants, can amplify toxic risks via combined interactive effects. Cumulative evidence indicates that micro(nano)plastics perturb soil physicochemical conditions and alter soil carbon–nitrogen stocks, with adverse consequences for soil biota, agroecosystem productivity and ecosystem services. While microplastic‑driven environmental risks have gained increasing recognition, the cumulative ecological responses under climate‑change stress remain insufficiently elucidated. Multidisciplinary investigations are required to disentangle the complex interactions between micro(nano)plastics, soil biota, edaphic properties and climatic perturbations. This Topic addresses micro(nano)plastic pollution under climate change, encompassing ecotoxicological responses, environmental consequences and feasible mitigation techniques. We invite submissions of short communications, review articles and original research papers for this Topic.
