Advancing Sustainable Livestock Production: Integrating Feed Evaluation and Feeding Management into Precision Livestock Farming
Topic Information
Dear Colleagues,
The growing demand for animal products, coupled with the rising cost and shrinking supply of conventional feeds such as corn and soybean meal, has driven significant interest in alternative energy and protein feed ingredients. Consequently, there is a pressing need to develop alternative and novel feed resources that can support sustainable livestock production. Emerging feed resources include, but are not limited to, insect-derived ingredients, algae and microalgae, single-cell or microbial proteins, and fermentation-derived ingredients, as well as agro-industrial and food-chain co-products and other resources arising from the circular bioeconomy. This Topic aims to advance the nutritional evaluation, detoxification, and efficient utilization of these resources, with emphasis on defining precise inclusion levels, highlighting that the evaluation and optimal use of these ingredients may depend on factors such as animal species, physiological stage, health status, environmental conditions, and production objectives. We welcome original research articles, reviews, and methodological papers on feed evaluation, alternative resources, and precision livestock farming. By integrating feed evaluation with innovative processing technologies and precision nutrition strategies, this Topic seeks to promote the sustainable and precise utilization of alternative and novel feed resources in livestock production.
