AI-Enabled Sustainable Development: Innovation, Governance and Practice
Topic Information
Dear Colleagues,
The artificial intelligence (AI) era brings novel insights to global governance and the delivery of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with advanced AI and computational tools serving as core enablers. Intelligent digital governance has become a vital driver for green, resilient, and inclusive progress toward the UN SDGs worldwide. Powered by data and algorithm-based decision-making, AI tools can precisely identify developmental challenges and provide quantitative indicators to advance balanced economic, social, and environmental sustainability. Practical innovations, including intelligent ecological monitoring, digital poverty assessment, smart resource allocation, and AI-powered public services, effectively boost inclusive social development and ecological conservation, accelerating holistic SDG achievement. Nevertheless, integrating AI technologies into global sustainable development practices still presents notable challenges and uncertainties. Three critical research gaps remain: (1) How can we clarify the interactive mechanisms between AI innovation and SDG implementation amid global technological transformation? (2) How can AI empower multi-dimensional governance to advance systematic, coordinated SDG frameworks? (3) How can we adopt emerging machine learning models to quantify AI’s multi-faceted impacts on sustainable development? This Topic welcomes original research on AI for environmental monitoring, intelligent resource optimization, inclusive sustainable policy design, AI-driven climate governance, clean energy innovation, and algorithm-based sustainable resource management. Such research can systematically clarify the interplay between AI technologies and SDG implementation in the intelligent era.

Preprints.org is a multidisciplinary platform offering a preprint service designed to facilitate the early sharing of your research. It supports and empowers your research journey from the very beginning.
MDPI Topics is collaborating with Preprints.org and has established a direct connection between MDPI journals and the platform. Authors are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity by posting their preprints at Preprints.org prior to publication:
i. Share your research immediately: disseminate your ideas prior to publication and establish priority for your work.
ii. Safeguard your intellectual contribution: Protect your ideas with a time-stamped preprint that serves as proof of your research timeline.
iii. Boost visibility and impact: Increase the reach and influence of your research by making it accessible to a global audience.
iv. Gain early feedback: Receive valuable input and insights from peers before submitting to a journal.
v. Ensure broad indexing: Web of Science (Preprint Citation Index), Google Scholar, Crossref, SHARE, PrePubMed, Scilit and Europe PMC.
