Value Distribution and Inclusive Development in Agri-Food Value Chains
Topic Information
Dear Colleagues,
The distribution of value along agri-food value chains is central to understanding structural transformation, rural development, and food system modernization in developing countries. As economies develop, an increasing share of value is generated beyond the farm gate, including in processing, logistics, retail, and food services, reshaping income distribution and market power among stakeholders.
Despite its importance, empirical evidence on how value is created and distributed along the agri-food value chains remains limited and fragmented. Existing studies highlight substantial heterogeneity across commodities, regions, and institutional contexts, as well as the roles of urbanization, technological change, and policy reforms in driving value chain transformation.
This Topic seeks to advance empirical research on the distribution of value in agricultural value chains and on how to realize inclusive development in agri-food value chains. We particularly welcome studies based on case studies, original surveys, linked data, or quasi-experimental methods. Contributions should identify mechanisms shaping value creation and distribution and provide policy-relevant insights.
Submissions focusing solely on theoretical or simulation models without empirical validation will not be considered.
