Numerical Simulation of Turbulent Flows in Rivers
This special issue belongs to the section "Water Erosion and Sediment Transport".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Turbulence governs many of the most consequential processes in rivers: momentum exchange, mixing and dispersion, sediment transport, bank erosion, local scour around infrastructure, and habitat-forming hydraulics. As rivers face growing pressures from flood risk, climate-driven hydrologic change, navigation demands, and restoration objectives, there is an increasing need for numerical tools that can resolve or faithfully represent turbulent flow physics across complex bathymetry, mobile beds, vegetation, ice cover, and hydraulic structures.
This Special Issue, “Numerical Simulation of Turbulent Flows in Rivers,” invites original research articles and reviews that advance modelling capability, credibility, and practical applicability. We welcome contributions spanning RANS, URANS, LES, hybrid approaches, and emerging high-fidelity methods, including robust turbulence closures, near-bed and free-surface treatments, morphodynamic coupling, and multiphase or sediment-laden turbulence. Studies that emphasize verification, validation, and uncertainty quantifications supported by laboratory experiments, field measurements (e.g., ADCP/ADV, tracer studies), and benchmark test cases are strongly encouraged.
Interdisciplinary work linking CFD with data assimilation, remote sensing, machine learning surrogates, and high-performance computing is also of interest, particularly where it enables faster decision-making for design and operations. By bringing together academia and industry practitioners, this Special Issue aims to deliver transferable insights, reproducible workflows, and actionable guidance for engineering and river science applications.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Water is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
