Dear Colleagues,
Primordial Black Holes (PBHs), black holes that could have formed in the early Universe through several different mechanisms, represent a well-motivated and versatile avenue for exploring the physics of the early Universe. PBHs have regained considerable attention in recent years due to advances in gravitational-wave astronomy, together with renewed progress on the theoretical side. Depending on their mass range and formation history, PBHs may contribute to the dark matter abundance and generate observable signatures across a wide range of cosmological and astrophysical scales.
A central challenge in theoretical PBH research lies in understanding their formation mechanisms and resulting abundance, which depend sensitively on the characteristics and statistics of primordial perturbations, together with nonlinear relativistic effects during gravitational collapse. In parallel, observational prospects involving scalar-induced gravitational waves, stochastic gravitational-wave backgrounds, and other cosmological observables provide complementary pathways to investigate and test PBHs.
The aim of this Special Issue is to provide a focused platform for recent advances in the theoretical and phenomenological study of PBHs. Contributions addressing PBH formation across different physical mechanisms, gravitational-wave signatures associated with PBHs, and their broader implications for cosmology are particularly encouraged.
