Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Symmetry in digital image processing and visualization is one of the most rapidly evolving fields of information technology today, and its applications are widely expanded in various fileds such as medical imaging, remote sensing, industrial inspection, computer vision and robotics, photo editing, and information visualization. With the rapid growth of multimedia content in social media and smartphone apps, innovative image processing tools and applications are popular for providing featured images to promote the aesthetics, entertainment, publicity, integrity, and security of these applications. The symmetry between visual quality and system performance is one of the most important issues for implementing practical applications. This Special Issue of symmetry invites original research or studies into techniques and applications of symmetry in image processing and visualization. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Symmetric image filtering, enhancement, and smoothing
  • Image analysis, segmentation, recognition, and understanding
  • Image representation, compression, and coding
  • Symmety-based data visualization
  • Symmetry-based image communication
  • Image hiding and steganography
  • Image sharing and visual secret sharing
  • Artifical intelligence and image processing
  • Symmetric image processing applications

Image Segmentation via Multiscale Perceptual Grouping

The human eyes observe an image through perceptual units surrounded by symmetrical or asymmetrical object contours at a proper scale, which enables them to quickly extract the foreground of the image. Inspired by this characteristic, a model combined with multiscale perceptual grouping and unit-based segmentation is proposed in this paper. In the multiscale perceptual grouping part, a novel total variation regularization is proposed to smooth the image into different scales, which removes the inhomogeneity and preserves the edges. To simulate perceptual units surrounded by contours, the watershed method is utilized to cluster pixels into groups. The scale of smoothness is determined by the number of perceptual units. In the segmentation part, perceptual units are regarded as the basic element instead of discrete pixels in the graph cut. The appearance models of the foreground and background are constructed by combining the perceptual units. According to the relationship between perceptual units and the appearance model, the foreground can be segmented through a minimum-cut/maximum-flow algorithm. The experiment conducted on the CMU-Cornell iCoseg database shows that the proposed model has a promising performance. Full article

Image fusion is one of the most rapidly evolving fields in image processing today, and its applications are widely expanded in various fields. In the field of image fusion, the method based on multi-scale decomposition plays an important role. However, it faces many difficult puzzles, such as the risk of over-smoothing during decomposition, blurring of fusion results, and loss of details. Aiming at these problems, this paper proposes a novel decomposition-based image fusion framework, which overcomes the problems of noise, blurring, and loss of details. Both the symmetry and asymmetry between infrared and visible images are important research hotspots in this paper. The experiments confirmed that the fusion framework outperforms other methods in both subjective observation and objective evaluation. Full article

A multi-purpose image-based QR code is designed in this paper. There are four purposes for the generated image-based QR code. In the first purpose, the basic image-based QR code with the look of a host image is with an ingenious layout to be identified easier. In the second one, a saliency region detection method is adopted for enhancing the quality of the image-based QR code. In the third one, the host image is embedded into the image-based QR code for further access to the host image; Finally, the visual cryptography-based watermarking method is applied to the host image embedded image-based QR code. In the case that the specific users need verification from the image-based QR code, the binary verified image can be retrieved when the public share is available. The experimental results demonstrate that the generated image-based QR code not only looked better than some previous works but also had high quality host image embedded and identification ability.
