Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Capillary liquid chromatographic techniques continue to attract attention in the analytical chemistry society. The fast development of ultrahigh pressure capillary liquid chromatography has aided in increasing the popularity of the methodology. The very high separation power for highly complex samples has resulted in new applications in all fields of science. The use of very high pressures and capillaries in combination with novel stationary phases and phase supports have resulted in much research in the field since the introduction of ultrahigh pressure liquid chromatography in 1997. Instrumental developments in column technology have resulted in decreased contributions of band broadening, but there are still many challenges considering the commercial instruments.

The aim of this special issue is to present the state of art in capillary liquid chromatography techniques. Novel methodologies and stationary phases will be introduced for a vast number of various types of matrixes and samples. Focus will be on the use of capillary liquid chromatography in lipidomics and metabolomics, but as well in other fields of science.

Abstract
A strategy for the preparation of silica-based monolithic capillary columns (150 × 0.1 mm) with high selectivity to amino acids is presented. The zwitterionic columns were prepared by coating the silica monolith with [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]-dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl)-ammonium hydroxide via 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate. A strategy for the preparation of silica-based monolithic capillary columns (150 × 0.1 mm) with high selectivity to amino acids is presented. The zwitterionic columns were prepared by coating the silica monolith with [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]-dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl)-ammonium hydroxide via 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate. The columns were evaluated under isocratic conditions in hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography. The best separation of amino acids was obtained on the monolithic column prepared by a stepwise modification procedure where the modification step was repeated four times. The mixture of fifteen amino acids was separated within 13 min using the mobile phase consisting of 75% acetonitrile and 25% 5 mmol/L ammonium acetate at pH 4.5. Full article
