Dear Colleagues,
Land–atmosphere coupling is a key factor of the Earth’s system, enabling the continuous exchange of radiative energy between the land surface and the atmosphere. These interactions influence radiative forcing, air quality, extreme weather, and climate feedbacks in a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. Satellite remote sensing has become a valuable tool for investigating land–atmosphere coupling and for monitoring atmospheric and land surface properties at regional to global scales.
Significant progress has been achieved in the retrieval of atmospheric properties, including aerosol optical and microphysical characteristics, trace gases, greenhouse gases, and other atmospheric constituents, through the use of diverse remote sensing instruments. At the same time, advances in land surface remote sensing have enhanced our ability to monitor and quantify land cover, vegetation structure, soil moisture, surface albedo, land surface temperature, and other related surface properties. However, accurately separating atmospheric and surface signals from satellite measurements remains challenging, particularly in heterogeneous and rapidly changing environments.
This Special Issue, entitled Application of Remote Sensing in Land–Atmosphere Coupling, aims to bring together original studies that are related to the retrieval, validation, and application of atmospheric and surface properties derived from satellite observations. The primary focus is on the retrieval of atmospheric and surface properties, while contributions related to land–atmosphere coupling mechanisms are also encouraged. Articles may address, but are not limited to, the following topics:
- Retrieval of atmospheric properties (aerosol optical and microphysical properties, trace gases, greenhouse gases);
- Retrieval of land/ocean surface properties (surface reflectance and albedo, land surface temperature, sea surface temperature, land cover, vegetation structure, sun glint, ocean colour, etc.);
- Land–atmosphere coupling mechanisms and their climate impacts;
- Comparison of multiple remote sensing techniques for observing the land–atmosphere coupled system;
- Radiative transfer modelling for the land–atmosphere coupled system;
- Machine learning approaches for studies related to the land–atmosphere coupled system;
- Remote sensing applications to air quality, climate change, and other related topics.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
