Hyperspectral Remote Sensing for Complex Scene Understanding and Practical Applications
This special issue belongs to the section "Remote Sensing Image Processing".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Hyperspectral remote sensing provides detailed spectral and spatial information that enables the fine-grained observation and analysis of the Earth’s surface. It has shown strong potential in a wide range of fields, including in environmental monitoring, precision agriculture, forestry, disaster response, and resource exploration. In recent years, advances in imaging systems, big data processing, and artificial intelligence have substantially improved the capability of hyperspectral imagery in terms of scene understanding and feature extraction. However, complex real-world scenes still present major challenges, such as spectral variability, mixed pixels, noise interference, background heterogeneity, and limited labeled data. These issues make robust understanding and the practical application of hyperspectral data far from easy, and call for further research on robust and efficient methods for hyperspectral data interpretation in complex scenes.
This Special Issue aims to present recent advances in the theories, methods, datasets, and applications that improve the understanding, interpretation, and deployment of hyperspectral remote sensing in complex scenes. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Spectral unmixing and subpixel information extraction;
- Hyperspectral image restoration and super-resolution;
- Image-level and pixel-level classification;
- Object-level and pixel-level change detection and target detection;
- Multimodal and multitemporal hyperspectral data analysis;
- Hyperspectral benchmark datasets;
- Real-world applications in agriculture, forestry, ecology, and related domains.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Remote Sensing is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
