The following is a short Q&A with Prof. Dr. Michael C. Georgiadis, who shared his vision for the journal with us, as well as his views of the research area and open access publishing:

1. What appealed to you about the journal that made you want to take the role as its Section Editor-in-Chief?

Becoming an Editor-in-Chief of a scientific journal like Processes is an esteemed and influential role that appeals to many researchers for a variety of reasons. For me, this position offers a unique opportunity to contribute significantly to the advancement of scientific knowledge in the energy systems engineering field and make a lasting impact on it. Moreover, I believe I will have the opportunity to contribute towards shaping the field by defining the direction and quality of scientific research contributions within their journal's scope.

2. What does the future of this field of research look like?

The future of energy systems research is expected to be dynamic, innovative, and driven by the urgent need to address pressing global challenges such as climate change, energy security, and sustainability. Some key trends and areas of focus that are likely to shape the future of energy systems research include renewable energy integration, energy storage and conversion, smart grids and energy management, energy markets optimization, decarbonization and electrification, demand-side management, energy efficiency, energy policies, and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

3. What is your vision for the journal?

My vision for the open access journal Processes is for it to be a globally accessible, interdisciplinary platform that publishes high-quality research in the broad area of process and energy systems engineering and related disciplines. In my view, the journal should promote rigorous peer review, new research advancements, challenging industrial applications, and an engaged research community to advance knowledge and drive innovation in the process systems engineering field.

4. What do you think of the development of open access in the publishing field?

The development of open access in the energy systems field has had a transformative impact by increasing accessibility, promoting global collaboration, accelerating progress, and enhancing the visibility and impact of energy systems research. As open access continues to evolve, addressing energy and sustainability challenges and ensuring the continued availability of high-quality research will be crucial for its further development and success in the energy systems field.

We wish Prof. Dr. Michael C. Georgiadis every success both in his research and in the development of Processes.
