Innovations in Pediatric and Neonatal Drug Formulation and Delivery

This special issue belongs to the section “Drug Delivery and Controlled Release“.

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The development of medicines for neonates and children poses unique challenges due to age-related differences in physiology, drug metabolism, and treatment needs, combined with the limited availability of age-appropriate formulations. Designing safe, effective, and acceptable drug products for this vulnerable population requires innovative pharmaceutical strategies that bridge scientific, technological, and regulatory advances.

We are pleased to invite you to contribute to this Special Issue in Pharmaceutics, which will focus on drug delivery and formulation science tailored for neonates and children. This Special Issue aims to highlight progress in the design of novel delivery systems, advanced manufacturing technologies, and predictive modeling approaches that enable optimized pediatric dosing and safety.

Original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Drug delivery systems specifically designed for neonates and children (oral, injectable, inhalable, and novel routes);
  • Formulation challenges, including solubility, stability, excipient safety, and palatability;
  • Advanced manufacturing techniques such as nanotechnology, 3D printing, multiparticulates, and flexible solid dosage forms;
  • In vitro–in vivo correlation and physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modeling for dose optimization;
  • Regulatory science in pediatric formulations, including harmonization and requirements for child-friendly medicines.

This Special Issue will serve as a platform to showcase cutting-edge research at the intersection of pharmaceutical technology and pediatric medicine, with the ultimate goal of improving therapeutic outcomes for neonates and children.

We look forward to receiving your valuable contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Pharmaceutics is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
