Manipulation of the Blood–Brain Barrier for CNS Drug Delivery Enhancement

Dear Colleagues,

Since its inception, the field of blood–brain barrier manipulations, to selectively increase therapeutic agents’ brain concentration to treat central nervous system (CNS) disease, has seen many changes and advancements, and so has its recognition in terms of its clinical relevance. Initially considered a fringe discipline, it is nowadays unavoidable when discussing the treatment of CNS diseases.  In 1908, the German physician Paul Ehrlich stipulated, “To exert its effect, a molecule must first reach its target”; hence, highlighting the relevance of circumventing the BBB for therapeutic purposes.

This Special Issue is dedicated to specifically addressing this delivery impediment in the treatment of brain diseases via different strategies that all share the same goal. We are pleased to invite you to submit original research articles and reviews that thoroughly describe the physiological and pharmacological aspects of the BBB; various detailed approaches for CNS delivery, and those discussing specific shortcomings and advantages. We aim to gather a collection of articles that identify delivery strategies, which are either actively in use or about to be clinically used. Our Special Issue also intends to publish papers describing what the future might hold in the field of delivery across the BBB. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following: BBB physiology and pathological remodeling, intra-arterial chemotherapy, BBB disruption, convection-enhanced delivery, and nanocarriers.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
