Fabrication and Applications of Micro/Nano Colloidal Materials
This special issue belongs to the section "Microscale Materials Science".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The development of next-generation functional materials is increasingly becoming more dependent on the precise integration and synergistic control of multiple functionalities at the micro/nano-scale. Micro/nano colloidal materials—such as metal nanoparticles, semiconductor nanocrystals, polymeric microspheres, and emulsions—serve as ideal multi-platforms for achieving sophisticated functional integration, owing to their tunable size, morphology, surface characteristics, interfacial properties, and quantum confinement effects. Through the rational design and controlled fabrication of such colloidal materials with tailored structures, compositions, and interfaces, uniform, efficient, and well-coordinated functional responses can be realized even in complex multi-physics environments.
This Special Issue focuses on the precision fabrication, structural regulation, and functional applications of key solution-based colloidal materials. We invite cutting-edge research contributions in related areas, including, but not limited to, the following: controlled synthesis and surface plasmon resonance modulation of metal nanoparticles, band engineering and photoelectric performance optimization of semiconductor nanocrystals, precision fabrication and stimuli-responsive design of polymeric microspheres, stabilization and functionalization of emulsion systems, and innovative strategies for constructing multi-component colloidal hybrid materials. Original works addressing emerging topics such as mechanistic investigations, advanced characterization techniques, and multi-scale theoretical simulations of colloidal systems are also highly encouraged.
In terms of applications, this Special Issue will highlight innovative uses of these colloidal materials in a range of fields, including lighting and display technologies, catalytic conversion, energy storage and conversion, biomedical diagnostics and therapy, sensing and detection, and advanced coatings, with particular attention paid to the synergistic enhancement effects enabled by multi-component colloidal systems in interfacial processes.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Controlled synthesis, surface modification, and plasmonic property modulation of metal nanoparticles;
- Synthesis methods, surface engineering, and optimization of photoelectric properties of semiconductor nanocrystals;
- Precision fabrication, responsive design, and functional modification of polymeric microspheres;
- Stabilization mechanisms, interfacial engineering, and multi-responsive design of emulsion systems;
- Interfacial design and synergistic effects of multi-component colloidal hybrid materials;
- Mechanistic studies, advanced characterization techniques, and multi-scale theoretical simulations of colloidal systems;
- Self-assembly behavior and superstructure construction of colloidal materials;
- Innovative applications in catalysis, energy, biomedicine, optoelectronics, and other fields;
- Large-scale production, stability, and recyclability of colloidal materials.
We cordially invite submissions of original research articles, comprehensive reviews, and forward-looking perspective articles. We look forward to receiving your outstanding contributions to foster academic exchange and innovation in this field.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Micro is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1200 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
