Dear Colleagues,
Water scarcity poses a significant challenge across the world, driving the urgent need for efficient, scalable, and sustainable solutions in water treatment. Membrane technologies have emerged as a cornerstone in this endeavor, playing an increasingly vital role in desalination, wastewater reclamation, and pure water production. This Special Issue, entitled "Membrane Materials and Technologies for Sustainable Water Treatment," will compile cutting-edge research and innovative developments that push the boundaries of membrane science and engineering.
This Special Issue will showcase high-quality original research and review articles that highlight innovations in material design, process optimization, and our understanding of separation mechanisms. We invite contributions that explore advanced membrane processes, including, but not limited to, reverse osmosis, nanofiltration, electrodialysis, and thermally coupled systems such as pervaporation desalination and membrane distillation. This Special Issue’s scope extends to emerging fields such as membrane-based confined catalytic removal of emerging pollutants and artificial intelligence (AI)-enhanced membrane science, which are finding their competitive edge in treating challenging water sources. We believe that such advancements will pave the way for more efficient, cost-effective, and sustainable solutions to the world's growing water challenges.
Topics of particular interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- The preparation and characterization of advanced membrane materials;
- Membrane applications in water desalination and removal of organic pollutants;
- Modeling and simulation of membrane processes;
- Progresses in membrane fouling, scaling, and long-term stability in high-salinity environments;
- Artificial intelligence (AI)-enhanced membrane science.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Membranes is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
