Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to revolutionize various sectors, it is essential to address the critical issues related to safety, trustworthiness, and ethics in its development and deployment. This Special Issue aims to delve into these interconnected dimensions, showcasing recent advancements and ongoing challenges in establishing safe, trustworthy, and ethical AI practices.
We invite contributions that examine the principles and methodologies required to build AI systems that are not only effective but also secure, transparent, and ethically sound. We seek to highlight innovative research that identifies and addresses challenges related to safety, trustworthiness, and ethics across latest AI applications, including large language models (LLMs), generative AI, AI agents, and AI-generated content (AIGC). Additionally, we will consider all relevant aspects of AI, such as privacy, fairness, transparency, accountability, and sustainability.
By fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, this Special Issue will serve as a platform for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to share insights and solutions that promote the safe and ethical use of AI. Our goal is to inform and inspire ongoing discourse around the societal implications of AI, ensuring that the technological advancements we embrace contribute to social good and uphold ethical standards.
We welcome original research papers that explore the theoretical foundations, practical solutions, and emerging challenges within this crucial field. All types of papers, including articles, reviews, and communications, are welcome. Potential topics may include, but are not limited to, the following areas:
- Safeness, trustworthiness and ethical challenges in LLMs, AI agents and generative AI;
- AI misuse prevention (e.g. deepfakes, misinformation);
- AIGC copyrights and traceability;
- Ethical frameworks for AI development;
- Robustness and vulnerability of AI systems;
- Safety mechanisms in AI systems;
- Understanding and mitigating AI bias;
- Transparency and accountability in AI;
- Data privacy and security in AI;
- Ethical and trustworthy AI in healthcare, education, transportation, etc.;
- AI and human rights;
- Sustainable AI and environmental considerations;
- User-centric approaches to ethical AI;
- Governance and regulations of AI technologies;
- AI for social good.
We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Mathematics is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs).
