Synthesis, Characterization and Applications of Sustainable Advanced Nanomaterials

With the rapid development of nanotechnology, nanomaterials have recently attracted the attention of the scientific community due to their unique structural, morphological, optical, electrical, thermal and magnetic characteristics. These enhanced properties are caused by their high surface to volume ratio that is due to their size falling in the 1–100 nm range. Nanomaterials can be metallic based nanoparticles (ferrites, chromates, aluminates, bismutates and others) or carbon oxides (carbon nanotubes, graphenes, graphenes oxides and others). The tailoring of the shape, size and size distribution of nanoparticles, as well as the properties of hybrid  nanoparticles is achieved though different synthesis routes by modifying parameters such as pH, concentration of reactants, dopants or stirring speed. Some of these methods are quite complex, involving the use of reduction agents with little to no impact on the environment and needing a longer reaction time or a high processing temperature to complete crystallization. These tailored properties of nanoparticles make them suitable candidates for technological applications in photocatalysis, photoluminescence, biosensors, catalysis, humidity sensors, permanent magnets, magnetic drug delivery, magnetic liquids, magnetic refrigeration, ceramic pigments, microwave absorbents, corrosion protection, water decontamination, photocatalysis, antimicrobial agents or biomedicine (hyperthermia).

This Special Issue aims to cover a wide array of subjects from dealing with the synthesis, characterization and applications of nanomaterials. It will cover the state-of-the-art of advanced nanoparticles in a large range of disciplines (chemistry, pharmacy, nanomedicine, food science, cosmetics, agriculture, catalysis and environmental science). In the current context, articles and reviews dealing with the applications of advanced nanomaterials with respect to the contagion reduction of SARS-COV-2, sustainable technologies concerning renewable energy and current environmental issues are welcomed.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Materials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
