Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Due to their engineered structures, mechanical metamaterials exhibit extraordinary properties that natural materials cannot achieve, transforming fields such as aerospace and biomedicine. The development of additive manufacturing has made it possible to create complex, personalized structures with mechanical, acoustic, or thermal functionalities. This Special Issue focuses on the intersection of mechanical metamaterials and additive manufacturing, highlighting innovations in the design, fabrication, development, and practical application of these materials.

Despite recent advancements, challenges related to the optimization of metamaterial design, the development of additive manufacturing materials, and understanding the interactions between AM process parameters and metamaterial performance remain. These challenges span the entire process, from design and material innovation to the exploration of manufacturing parameters that meet specific requirements. This Special Issue welcomes the submission of original research papers and review articles that address these challenges and provide an overview of advances in the field.

The scope of this Special Issue includes, but is not limited to, the following topics:

(1) The design and computational modelling of mechanical metamaterials;

(2) Advances in AM techniques for metamaterials (e.g., multi-material, 4D printing);

(3) Dynamic, adaptive, or programmable metamaterials;

(4) Lightweight and energy-absorbing structures for industrial applications;

(5) Biomechanical metamaterials for medical devices or implants;

(6) The characterization of mechanical, thermal, or acoustic properties;

(7) Scalable manufacturing and post-processing strategies;

We look forward to receiving your contributions and advancing this transformative field.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Materials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
