Space Medicine Advancements: From Human Health to Biomedical System Design

The second space age, fueled by commercial spaceflight ventures, has expanded human activity in space beyond professional astronauts to civilian spacefarers. Missions like Inspiration4, the first all-civilian spaceflight, highlight both the opportunities and challenges of this new era. While these advancements democratize access to space, they also raise pressing questions about the impact of microgravity, cosmic radiation, and other spaceflight-associated factors on human health, particularly for individuals with diverse medical backgrounds.

This Special Issue invites manuscripts that delve into the biomedical implications of space travel, with a particular emphasis on disease pathogenesis and physiological adaptation in extraterrestrial environments. Leveraging comprehensive multi-omics datasets, advanced artificial intelligence (AI) models, and state-of-the-art simulation technologies, researchers are now uniquely positioned to investigate the adaptive responses of cellular, molecular, and physiological systems to altered gravity and radiation exposure. These investigations not only elucidate the mechanisms underlying space-related health risks but also inform the development of innovative therapeutic strategies for addressing diseases on Earth.

We seek studies that leverage experimental models, astronaut-derived datasets, and simulations to uncover novel pathways, biomarkers, or countermeasures relevant to spaceflight health. Contributions highlighting innovative biomedical diagnostic tools or advancements in tissue engineering, particularly those with dual applications in remote or extreme Earth environments, are also encouraged. We also welcome related Earth-based biomedical studies that may serve as foundational research and provide guidance to advance space biomedicine, particularly through the discovery of novel systems capable of detecting, diagnosing, and treating human diseases. This Special Issue aims to prepare humanity for the challenges of sustained space exploration while advancing our understanding of health and disease in unique environments.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
