Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Reconstruction in head and neck presents a unique challenge, demanding a delicate balance between restoring vital functions—such as speech, swallowing, and breathing—and preserving a patient's fundamental sense of identity and appearance.

In the last decade many things have changed in this field.  New technologies such as 3D CAD CAM, intraoperative navigation, robotic surgery, and bioengineered tissues have changed the scenario of this discipline. Hybrid reconstructions have become a reality above all else for bone reconstructions.

Tissue transplant for facial reconstruction has begun to be applied. New flaps will result in less morbidity at the donor site and better suitability to the recipient site substituted the old workhorses we were used to.

Surgeons now pay more attention to the restoration of function and morphology and no more to the mere survival of the patient. Facial nerve surgery is not just the restoration of smiling, but the motility of all facial muscles is now reconsidered, including eyelids.

Head and neck reconstruction is a multidisciplinary field, and with this Special Issue, we want to highlight the new updates of this dynamic and rapidly evolving landscape.
