Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery/Aesthetic Medicine
A section of Journal of Clinical Medicine (ISSN 2077-0383).
Section Information
The field of plastic surgery was born with the intention of correcting malformations and treating injuries and mutilations, with the aim of restoring the original function of the part, as well as its initial appearance.
Plastic surgery has a thousand-year history, its first traces dating back to the time of the Egyptians and Ancient India. In those days, in fact, many people resorted to such treatments to reconstruct parts of the body amputated or lost in battle. One of the first reconstructive plastic surgery descriptions was the reconstruction of a nose.
It was not until after the Middle Ages, however, that aesthetic surgery and aesthetic medicine flourished. Over the centuries, methodologies became more and more refined, and the introduction of biomaterials made it possible to reshape volume and anatomical structures to make them more pleasant.
Since then, the progress of technology has made it possible to perform increasingly complex procedures, such as the transfer of tissues from a donor site to a recipient site by interrupting the vascular connections and subsequent microsurgical suturing of the vessels. This allows restoring important volumes of loss of substance after skin cancer remotion, traumas, and so on.
Today, cosmetic surgery/medicine deals with improving the external appearance of a part of the face or body. Cosmetic surgeries are becoming increasingly widespread: scientific progress has, in fact, made these treatments safer and more effective, limiting the possible risks for the patient. Additionally, new frontiers are constantly emerging, such as lymphatic vessel surgery and regenerative surgery for traumas, ulcers, lymphedema, and many other conditions.
The aim and the scope of this Section is to focus on all aspects of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery and Aesthetic Medicine, discussing traditional techniques and new frontiers.
