Data-Driven Operations and Management for Sustainable Transportation Infrastructure
This special issue belongs to the section "Smart Infrastructures".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Driven by the dual imperatives of global digital transformation and intensifying climate change, transportation infrastructure is standing at a pivotal inflection point—evolving from traditional static physical assets into dynamic digital assets. Faced with aging facilities, frequent extreme weather events, and increasingly stringent carbon neutrality targets, reliance solely on physical expansion and conventional repairs can no longer meet the urgent demands of future cities for resilience and efficiency. This Special Issue aims to explore how the deep integration of digital operations and management can provide novel solutions for the sustainability and intelligence of transportation infrastructure within this highly uncertain macro-environment.
This Special Issue seeks to assemble frontier research in this domain, with a particular focus on how digital technologies can establish efficient linkages between ensuring traffic safety, enhancing asset performance, and achieving decarbonization goals. We specifically invite innovative contributions covering the full lifecycle management of infrastructure:
- Asset Management: Focusing on the digitization and valuation of road assets based on BIM and GIS technologies to achieve precise control over facility status;
- Environmental Sustainability: Focusing on carbon emission accounting systems and low-carbon maintenance strategies, exploring how digital tools can quantify and reduce the environmental footprint during construction and operation;
- Operational Safety and Resilience: Focusing on incident warning, risk assessment, and emergency response mechanisms based on multi-source data fusion to enhance the system's survival and recovery capabilities against sudden shocks.
In summary, this Special Issue focuses on the digital reshaping of transportation infrastructure operations and management. We expect submissions to target the specific scenarios mentioned above (asset maintenance, carbon emission monitoring, and emergency warning) and propose quantitative models, algorithmic optimizations, or management frameworks with demonstrable empirical value. By aggregating these contributions, this Special Issue aims to establish a new data-driven infrastructure governance paradigm, tangibly driving the transportation system’s transformation from traditional, extensive maintenance toward a synergistic, digital, and green transition across all elements and the entire lifecycle.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the Special Issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Infrastructures is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1800 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
