Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

With the increasing demand for efficiently designing, constructing, and maintaining infrastructure facilities, there is a critical need to incorporate AI in the engineering and management of infrastructure facilities. AI plays a key role in designing, building, and managing infrastructure through automation, robotics, and smart systems. AI technologies can enable engineers and managers to (1) optimize construction materials in designing, (2) utilize robots in constructing, and (3) install smart sensors in managing infrastructure facilities while emphasizing sustainability aspects of the AI-enabled design, robotic construction, and smart maintenance operations. Various AI technologies can also be adopted to mitigate the impacts of climate changes on infrastructure performance.

This Special Issue aims to publish high-quality research papers and state-of-the-art review articles that focus on AI applications in design, construction, and management of infrastructure facilities. Submissions to this Special Issue should focus on various advances in AI technologies that have taken place worldwide in designing, constructing, and maintaining resilient and sustainable infrastructures.

This Special Issue will encompass emerging topics, including the following:

  • AI in designing infrastructure facilities;
  • AI in constructing infrastructure facilities;
  • AI in monitoring infrastructure conditions;
  • AI in evaluating innovative infrastructure materials;
  • AI in optimizing recycled materials in infrastructures;
  • AI in digital construction project delivery;
  • AI in Bridge Management Systems (BMS);
  • AI in Pavement Management Systems (PMS);
  • AI in Building Information Management (BIM);
  • AI in improving safety in constructed infrastructure facilities;
  • AI in improving safety in roads, bridges, and railroad tracks;
  • AI in detecting hazards in roads, bridges, and railroad tracks;
  • AI in improving disaster preparation and response;
  • AI adoption by governments and civil industries.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Infrastructures is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1800 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
