Resilient and Sustainable Bridges: Integrating Design, Construction, and Maintenance
This special issue belongs to the section “Sustainable Infrastructures“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Bridges are critical components of transportation networks and play an important role in economic development and community connectivity; however, increasing exposure to climate change, extreme weather events, aging infrastructure, and rising sustainability demands highlights the urgent need for innovative approaches that enhance not only the resilience and long-term performance of individual bridges, but also the overall sustainability and resilience of bridge networks. This Special Issue aims to provide an integrated platform that advances knowledge and practice of resilient and sustainable bridge systems by linking together design, construction, and maintenance, at the levels of both individual structures and entire networks.
The Special Issue will focus on emerging technologies, advanced materials, and data-driven strategies that improve structural safety, durability, and lifecycle efficiency across interconnected bridge systems. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, climate-resilient bridge and network design, sustainable material applications (e.g., UHPC, recycled materials, and composites), accelerated construction techniques, structural health monitoring, digital twin technologies for individual bridges and networks, AI-driven bridge management, lifecycle assessment, and performance-based maintenance strategies. Emphasis will also be placed on interdisciplinary approaches that combine engineering design, construction innovation, and smart monitoring systems to improve adaptability, reduce environmental impacts, and strengthen the resilience of entire bridge networks.
By gathering in one place researchers, practitioners, and policymakers, this Special Issue seeks to promote forward-looking solutions that enhance the sustainability and resilience of bridge infrastructure—from single structures to network-level systems—against future uncertainties while supporting long-term development goals.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Infrastructures is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1800 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
