Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The Special Issue, entitled “DevOps and Its Role in Software Engineering”, explores the transformative impact of DevOps practices on the field of software engineering. DevOps, which integrates development and operations, has become essential for organizations aiming to achieve rapid delivery, high quality, and continuous innovation. This Special Issue examines the multifaceted role of DevOps, highlighting its potential to enhance collaboration, efficiency, and automation in software development processes.

In addition to examining the multifaceted role of DevOps, this Special Issue places particular emphasis on the integration of empirical research to deepen our understanding of DevOps practices. Empirical studies play a crucial role in evaluating the effectiveness, outcomes, and challenges associated with DevOps implementation in real-world settings. By systematically collecting and analyzing data, these studies provide valuable insights into the impact of DevOps on software development cycles, organizational dynamics, and overall business outcomes. Through empirical research, the Special Issue offers actionable insights and evidence-based recommendations for organizations seeking to adopt or refine their DevOps practices. This empirical approach not only enriches our theoretical understanding of DevOps, but also informs practical strategies for successful implementation, making it an indispensable resource for researchers, practitioners, and industry leaders alike.

The articles within this Issue also emphasize the integration of empirical research, quality software engineering (QSE) practices, and artificial intelligence (AI), demonstrating how these elements collectively contribute to the evolution of DevOps. Key topics include optimizing development cycles through data-driven approaches, leveraging AI to automate complex tasks, and addressing the practical challenges of implementing DevOps at scale. The insights presented are invaluable for researchers, practitioners, and industry leaders, offering a comprehensive overview of the latest advancements and best practices in DevOps.

Topics of interest include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Empirical studies in DevOps implementation;
  • Quality assurance in CI/CD pipelines;
  • AI in DevOps automation;
  • Metrics and feedback loops in DevOps;
  • Security in DevOps (DevSecOps);
  • Toolchains and platforms for DevOps;
  • AI-driven decision making in DevOps.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Information is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
