Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Vascular disease (VD) remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. It encompasses a broad range of conditions, including localized atherosclerotic diseases such as peripheral artery disease (PAD) and carotid artery stenosis (CAS); aneurysmal pathologies such as aortic aneurysm (AA); venous disorders including chronic venous disease (CVD) and venous thromboembolism (VTE); and vascular-related wounds such as diabetic foot ulcer (DFU), venous leg ulcer (VLU), and arterial leg ulcer (ALU). Various risk factors contribute to the onset of subclinical VD, which may progress to overt clinical disease. The development of effective strategies for primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention is a critical public health priority.

In the era of precision medicine (PM), molecular biomarkers are emerging as valuable tools for early detection, risk stratification, and monitoring of individuals predisposed to VD. Recent advances in molecular biology, chemistry, and translational medicine have facilitated the identification of reliable biomarkers that support accurate diagnosis, patient stratification, and follow-up after pharmacological or surgical interventions, including vascular and endovascular procedures.

The current multidimensional approach to health and disease recognizes the need to integrate molecular sociology, an emerging interdisciplinary field that explores how molecular-level factors interact with social determinants of health. This perspective emphasizes the influence of socioeconomic status, environmental exposure, behavioral patterns, and healthcare access on gene expression, molecular pathways, and disease progression. By bridging the gap between biological and social sciences, molecular sociology contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the etiology and progression of vascular diseases, supporting the development of more effective and equitable prevention and treatment strategies.

Today’s comprehensive approach to disease management highlights the interplay between molecular, biological, and social determinants of health, underscoring the central role of molecular sciences and biomarker research in understanding and addressing VD.

In this Special Issue, we welcome original research articles and reviews that provide novel insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying vascular disease, as well as studies focused on the development of innovative diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers linked to therapeutic strategies. Articles must include data on molecular mechanisms or pathophysiology.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Molecular Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. There is an Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal. For details about the APC please see here. Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
