Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The influence of forests on water availability and quality is widely recognized. Forest management practices have been changing accordingly in recent decades to become more sustainable and to avoid unwanted effects on water resources, fisheries, and wildlife.

Forest practices such as road building, timber yarding, machine trail development, and slash disposal can expose mineral soils, decrease infiltration capacities of soils, increase erosion, and alter water flow paths through the hillslope by modifying canopy cover and soil structure. The impacts of forest practices can increase or decrease water availability and quality, which can affect aquatic life and ecosystems.

This Special Issue will comprise a selection of papers reporting the effects of contemporary forest watershed management practices on the physical, chemical, and biological aspects of aquatic ecosystems. We welcome studies on best management practices to ensure the protection of aquatic ecosystems at the same time as providing timber resources. We also encourage studies about the effects of prescribed fire, forest harvesting, site preparation on water quantity and quality and aquatic life. Original works and reviews are both welcome.

The ultimate goal of this Special Issue is to open a conversation on how we can improve forest management practices for the protection of water resources.
