Advanced Combustion Diagnostics:From Flame Structure to Emission Characterization
This special issue belongs to the section "Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Simulation of Combustion and Fire".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The Special Issue “Advanced Combustion Diagnostics:From Flame Structure to Emission Characterization” focuses on the latest experimental and computational advances that deepen our understanding of the complex interactions between flame structure, combustion chemistry, and pollutant formation. As the demand for high-efficiency and low-emission combustion technologies continues to grow, sophisticated diagnostic methods are essential for resolving the multiscale physical and chemical processes governing fuel conversion, heat release, and the generation of emissions such as soot, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and unburned hydrocarbons.
This Special Issue aims to bridge fundamental flame research with applied combustion engineering by providing a platform for innovative in situ and ex situ diagnostic techniques as well as high-fidelity modeling approaches. We welcome original research articles, reviews, and technical notes on topics including, but not limited to:
- laser-based and optical diagnostics (e.g., multispectral imaging, light-field imaging, LIF, CARS, absorption spectroscopy);
- multidimensional reconstruction of temperature, and species concentration;
- chemical effects of fuel components such as natural gas constituents, CO₂ dilution, and hydrogen enrichment on emissions;
- characterization of inverse and non-premixed flame structures;
- simultaneous retrieval of soot temperature and volume fraction in participating media;
- uncertainty quantification in optical measurements;
- integrated experimental–numerical methodologies for model validation;
- machine learning-assisted analysis of combustion data;
- diagnostic developments for practical combustors, engines, and gas turbines.
By assembling cutting-edge research in these areas, this Special Issue seeks to promote the advancement and practical application of next-generation combustion diagnostic technologies.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Fire is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
