Advanced Control Strategies for Power Electronics and Motor Drives

This special issue belongs to the section “F: Electrical Engineering“.

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Power electronics and motor drives serve as the cornerstone for electrified transportation and the grid integration of renewable energy, playing a pivotal role in enhancing the efficiency, performance, and reliability of modern energy systems. In response to growing application demands, advanced control strategies have become indispensable, moving beyond conventional methods to address system complexity and achieve superior dynamic responses, control precision, and operational resilience.

This evolution encompasses several key technological fronts. It includes advanced control schemes for a diverse range of electrical machines, such as permanent magnet synchronous, induction, reluctance, linear, high-speed, and multi-phase machines, tailored for high-performance applications. Concurrently, sophisticated control techniques for power electronic converters, including multi-level converters, dual-active bridge converters, solid-state transformers, and grid-interfaced converters, are being developed to manage complex power flows and ensure high efficiency and stability. Model predictive control strategies are being refined for fast dynamic responses and multi-objective optimization, while artificial intelligence (AI)-based control methods are opening new frontiers in intelligent, data-driven system operation. Furthermore, the development of fault-tolerant control strategies ensures system robustness, and technologies for smart sensing and intelligent operational maintenance enable predictive health management. Additionally, the proliferation of wide-bandgap (WBG) semiconductors demands advanced gate drive, modulation, and control techniques to fully exploit their high-speed switching capabilities while mitigating associated challenges.

This Special Issue aims to promote research and invites original works in the area of advanced control strategies for power electronics and motor drives.

Prospective authors are invited to submit original contributions and industry-focused papers on related topics of interest including, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Advanced control of electrical machines;
  • Advanced control of power electronic converters;
  • Model predictive control of power electronics and motor drives;
  • AI-based design, control, and predictive maintenance of power electronics and motor drives;
  • Intelligent sensing and condition monitoring of power electronics and motor drives;
  • Reliability and fault-tolerant control of power electronics motor drives;
  • Advanced gate drive, modulation, and control of WBG-based converters;
  • Applications of advanced control of power electronics and motor drives in industry.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Energies is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
