Artificial Intelligence for Virtual, Mixed, and Augmented Reality Content and Interaction

Dear Colleagues,

Recent years have witnessed rapid advancements at the intersection of artificial intelligence-generated content (AIGC) and extended reality (XR)—encompassing virtual reality (VR), mixed reality (MR), and augmented reality (AR). Driven by breakthroughs in generative AI (e.g., GANs, stable diffusion, and large language models) and the commercialization of cutting-edge hardware such as Apple Vision Pro, XR technologies are transitioning from niche tools to mainstream platforms, demanding more dynamic, personalized, and contextually adaptive content and interactions.

This Special Issue delves into the transformative convergence of VR, MR, and AR with AIGC, large LLMs, and agent-based systems, aiming to advance immersive experiences while addressing critical challenges in content generation, interactivity, and scalability. It explores the following key frontiers: generative AI integration in XR, leveraging advancements like GANs and stable diffusion for content creation (e.g., 3D modeling, avatar animation, and environment design) and extending to text, motion, video, and 3D object generation; LLM applications in XR, focusing on enhancing natural language interactions (e.g., in-person communication, document reading, language learning) and exploring multi-modal LLM integration for novel experiences; and adaptive, context-aware XR interfaces that seamlessly adapt to users’ environments through optimization and machine learning.

This Special Issue invites original research articles, reviews, and case studies on related topics, including AIGC-driven XR content generation and personalization, agent-based systems in VR/AR/MR, and LLM integration for natural interaction and contextual storytelling. Applications span multisensory use cases in cultural heritage, healthcare, and education, alongside investigations into ethical, legal, and societal implications of AI-XR convergence.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
