Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Corrosion inhibition has evolved from the simple application of oils and rudimentary inorganic salts to a sophisticated field of interfacial science. Historically, the industry relied heavily on chromates and other heavy metal-based inhibitors, which were very effective but posed severe environmental and health risks. With the implementation of stricter global regulations (such as REACH), the research trajectory shifted toward "Green" Corrosion Inhibitors. This transition has led to the exploration of plant extracts, amino acids, and biomass-derived surfactants as sustainable alternatives. Today, the field is undergoing a digital and molecular revolution, utilizing computational chemistry and nanotechnology to design inhibitors with atomic precision, ensuring high efficiency even in the most aggressive industrial media.

The aim of this Special Issue is to consolidate recent breakthroughs in the synthesis, evaluation, and mechanistic understanding of corrosion inhibitors. As industries push toward carbon neutrality and infrastructure longevity, there is a critical need for inhibitors that are not only eco-friendly but also high-performing under high-shear, high-temperature, and high-pressure conditions. We invite contributions that explore the synergy between experimental electrochemistry and theoretical modeling to provide a holistic view of modern inhibition strategies.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Green and Sustainable Inhibition: Novel plant-based, pharmaceutical-derived, and bio-inspired inhibitors.
  • Mechanistic Insights: Advanced surface characterization (XPS, AFM, SEM) and electrochemical studies (EIS, SVET) of inhibitor films.
  • Computational Modeling: Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations and Density Functional Theory (DFT) for predicting inhibitor efficiency.
  • Smart Delivery Systems: Encapsulation of inhibitors in nanocontainers for stimuli-responsive (pH, mechanical, or ionic) release.
  • Industrial Applications: Inhibition strategies for oil and gas pipelines, acid pickling, cooling water systems, and reinforced concrete.
  • Synergistic Formulations: Exploring the interaction between organic molecules and inorganic ions to enhance protective performance.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
