Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The construction industry is at a pivotal turning point. Under the banner of Construction 4.0, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as the primary catalyst for modernizing legacy processes. This transformation goes beyond simple digitization; it represents a fundamental shift in how project data is synthesized to drive better outcomes. While the sector has historically faced challenges in productivity, automation, and risk management, the fusion of AI-driven innovation with practical management applications offers a robust solution for the next generation of building professionals.

This Special Issue of AI invites researchers to contribute to a comprehensive collection of work exploring the cutting-edge innovations or real-world applications of AI within the broader context of construction management.

Aims and Scope

We seek high-quality submissions that demonstrate how AI-driven tools and autonomous systems are being developed and applied to solve complex problems in construction. The scope includes, but is not limited to, the following:

Construction Automation and Robotics: AI-driven autonomous site vehicles and machinery, including robotic systems for masonry, 3D concrete printing, and assembly; human–robot collaboration on the jobsite; and automated fabrication and modular construction management.

AI-Enhanced Site Safety and Health: Topics including computer vision for hazard detection, predictive risk modeling for accident prevention, and the use of wearable AI sensors for monitoring worker ergonomics.

Intelligent Planning and Governance: Innovations in AI for predictive cost estimation, schedule optimization, and automated contract/document analysis.

Site Execution and Digital Twins: Practical applications of AI-powered digital twins, automated progress tracking, and quality control systems.

Human-Centric AI: Research on the ethics of AI, workforce productivity, and the evolving role of management in an increasingly automated environment.

Sustainable and Resilient Delivery: Leveraging machine learning for carbon footprint tracking, waste reduction, and lifecycle management.

Other Emerging Frontiers: We welcome submissions on any novel intersection of AI and construction management, including but not limited to, cross-disciplinary applications (e.g., AI combined with Blockchain or AR/VR); legal, ethical, and policy frameworks for AI adoption in the AEC industry; and AI-based pedagogical strategies for training future construction managers.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. AI is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1800 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
