Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Viruses, often vectored by arthropods and insects, are a major threat to cereal production across the globe. Their management is complicated by the interaction between the vector and the virus, as well as by the presence of multiple viruses or multiple virus strains. Infection causes both decreases in yield and quality, and control is essentially limited to complex integrated pest management approaches, including planting timing, weed control, seed treatments, and variety resistance. Variety resistance is of great importance due to the variability of the environment, which often leads to hugely impactful economic losses in epidemic years. However, limited resistance exists, making virus resistance a challenge for breeders. 

This Special Issue welcomes research articles and reviews that discuss virus resistance in cereals.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Genetic identification of virus resistance, tolerance genes, or mechanisms;
  • Genetic investigation of cereal viruses and their impacts on virus resistance;
  • Advances in virus resistance breeding, including conventional and/or genetic engineering that focuses on either virus, vector, or both;
  • Effective evalutions of the impact of multi-virus infections;
  • Assessment of the durabillity of currently deployed resistance;
  • Epidemiology of cereal viruses;
  • Integrated pest management of cereal viruses with an emphasis on resistance.
