Cover Story: The design of ultra-small structures is a topic of major interest in engineering science, due to the recent attention given to smart nanodevices. It is acknowledged that the accurate modeling of nanosystems must take into account scale effects in order to properly capture size-dependent behaviour. In this context, non-local continuum mechanics provides refined tools to effectively model nanostructural responses. Ground-breaking non-local methodologies are illustrated and discussed in this work to solve challenging structural problems, ranging from higher order and curved nanobeams to nanoplates. Non-linear problems at the nanoscale are addressed by exploiting integral elasticity. Non-local methodologies for modeling structural assemblages, as well as nanobeam-nanofoundation interactions, are illustrated, applied and commented upon. View this paper
