Cover Story: Decarbonising global shipping requires near-term fuel pathways that deliver substantial lifecycle greenhouse gas reductions. This cover illustrates a constrained biomethanol production pathway in which sugarcane is cultivated exclusively on existing cropland, avoiding deforestation. Biofuel produced near major ports supplies maritime fuel demand with significantly lower well-to-wake emissions compared to conventional marine fuels. By integrating land use modelling, shipping energy demand, and lifecycle assessment, the study shows that targeted deployment of sugarcane-based biomethanol can contribute meaningfully to global shipping decarbonisation while remaining within robust sustainability guardrails. The analysis highlights that sustainability outcomes depend on robust land governance, coastal siting, and traceable supply chains. View this paper
