Cover Story: At the end of their life cycle, large amounts of tires are discarded in inappropriate places. This poses a serious environmental hazard, since tires cannot be simply degraded or reprocessed. The incorporation of waste tires, in the form of ground tire rubber (GTR), as filler substitute in rubber matrices is one viable strategy for addressing this issue. However, the low compatibility between GTR and the matrix leads to poor mechanical properties, even at low contents. The appropriate combination of cryogrinding and chemical surface treatments results as an option for tackling this limitation, giving added value to this waste, as well as enhanced mechanical performance. This approach could solve the environmental problem of post-consumer tires, favoring the development of sustainable materials. View this paper.
