Cover Story: Infection with Sarcocystis spp. causes public health issues and economic losses in livestock. Over 200 Sarcocystis species have been reported, and some of them can cause sarcocystosis in sheep, leading to emaciation, abortion, and even death. However, no Sarcocystis spp. infection had been reported in sheep in Shanxi Province until now. In this study, 582 mutton samples from ten counties in Shanxi were tested for Sarcocystis spp. by PCR amplification and sequencing of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (cox1) gene, with a prevalence of 33.85% (197/582). A total of 196 cox1 sequences matched S. tenella with 98.56–99.81% similarity, and one matched S. arieticanis with 99.71% similarity. This is the first report of Sarcocystis infection in sheep in Shanxi, with important implications for disease control in the region. View this paper
