Cover Story: Solid–liquid separation plays a crucial role in various industrial applications, particularly in the treatment and purification of suspensions. Decanter centrifuges are frequently used because they operate continuously and enable high throughput rates with short residence times. However, predicting separation performance is challenging due to dynamic phenomena within the device, such as sedimentation, sediment build-up and sediment transport. In practice, design considerations are based on analytical models and the expertise of manufacturers. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) enables a more accurate investigation of flow phenomena and their effects. This study uses OpenFOAM to simulate and validate multiphase flow in a laboratory decanter centrifuge. The results demonstrate the potential of CFD for optimizing centrifuge processes. View this paper
