Cover Story: A water-soluble arene ruthenium metalla-rectangle that had been functionalized with boronic acid groups and hosted different fluorescent dyes was synthesized and fully characterized. The host–guest systems showed different recognition mechanisms according to the analytes. A dose–response relationship, coherent with an allosteric mechanism, was observed with saccharides and phosphorylated molecules, while in the presence of planar aromatics, the sensors acted as an indicator displacement assay. Therefore, these results suggested that the sensors adapt their recognition mechanism to analytes, thus generating a multitasking fluorescence-based sensing probe. View this paper
