Cover Story: Iridium oxide (IrO2) displays appealing characteristics that make it the ideal candidate for specific applications. As for other metal oxides, controlling its architecture at the nanoscale can consent to boost the efficiency of the exhibited properties. Nanostructuration of IrO2 can be achieved through dedicated methodologies and techniques which allow obtaining metal oxide under different shapes, ranging from nanopowders to nanorods, nanotubes, nanofibers, and nanostructured thin films. The present review is dedicated to the state of the art of nanostructured IrO2, showing in each case the improvements in performances in particular for the most frequently reported applications of this material, such as oxygen evolution reaction (OER), electrochromic devices, sensing, supercapacitor, and field emission cathodes.
