Cover Story: Reverse cholesterol transport from peripheral tissues to the liver is a major atheroprotective event, with cholesterol efflux as a rate-limiting step. Nanoparticles mimicking natural HDL (rHDL) have been used in several clinical trials for cardiovascular disease therapy to remove cholesterol excess. Here, we show that rHDLs with lipid composition similar to nascent HDL are more efficient in promoting cholesterol efflux, and their physical characteristics should be taken into consideration to design more efficient rHDL to be used as cholesterol efflux promoting particles.
