Cover Story: Patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) often receive oral anticoagulants (OACs) to lower stroke risk, but some are hesitant to receive such treatment, creating challenges in their care. This study explored factors influencing OAC initiation in Australian general practice. Qualitative interviews included ten patients with AF. The results emphasized that patients value active doctor involvement. Effective communication, aligning treatment with health goals (especially stroke prevention), and a clear understanding of OAC benefits and drawbacks were vital facilitators. Barriers included inadequate doctor explanations and concerns about warfarin's inconvenience. Understanding patients’ perspectives on OAC initiation is crucial for comprehensive AF management. View this paper
