Cover Story: Clubroot, caused by the protist Plasmodiophora brassicae, is a soilborne disease of Brassica napus and other crucifers. Infected susceptible plants produce large root galls, indicating complex hormonal adjustments due to increased cell division and elongation, shifts in plant defense mechanisms, hindered water uptake, and alterations in typical plant functions. Specific changes in the hormonal pathway profiles of salicylic acid (SA), jasmonic acid (JA), abscisic acid (ABA), indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), and ethylene (precursor, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid; ACC) were associated with plant defense response activation and physiological changes in susceptible and resistant interactions in two B. napus cultivars, following inoculation with virulent and avirulent P. brassicae pathotypes.
