January 2022 - 146 articles

Cover Story: The molecular scaffold manipulation of phenols/polyphenols by the insertion of S/Se/Te-containing functionalities or by the replacement of oxygen atoms with heavier chalcogens is a currently pursued approach to boost or modulate their properties, with particular reference to their antioxidant properties. These latter properties are evaluated by conventional chemical assays and different model systems in association with computational approaches. Overall, the studies that are illustrated in this review contribute to the effort of drawing a well-defined picture of the mode of action of polyphenols and how their activity is affected by heavier chalcogens from the viewpoint of chemical mechanisms, an issue that is not frequently addressed in discussions regarding natural polyphenol activity. View this paper
