Cover Story: Detection of mammalian organisms is based on the observation of footprints. This, however, is not the strategy when it comes to microorganisms, since there are no feet to make the footprints. That said, by using molecular printing, it is possible to create 3D “prints” with shape and chemistry to fit each microorganism. These 3D prints indicate selectivity and high sensitivity since the organism used for creating the imprints is efficiently monitored, while other organisms will not be recognized. The imprint can be reused if it is rinsed between the assays. The limit of detection increases linearly by obtaining a baseline noise. The whole-cell-based microbial biosensors are low cost to prepare, along with having portability by miniaturization. The microorganism-based sensors hold important promise in the early diagnosis, with accurate and rapid detection and appropriate control measurements. View this paper.
