Cover Story: The PLF approach has aroused growing interest in many parts of the world among farmers and researchers. By improving the quality and safety of milk and meat, as well as animal health and welfare, the benefits of PLF technologies can play a significant role in the consumers’ perception of the sustainability of the food production industry. Quantitative analysis of the academic literature represents a tool for contributing to knowledge dissemination of this ongoing process and supporting experts in public policy decision-making on the digital transformation of farms. The dairy sector has played a pivotal role in the adoption of smart sensors, starting with the introduction of automatic milking machines. The paper provides an overview of the global distribution of research and development in this field, along with insights into 15 years of evolution. View this paper
