Cover Story: Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) is a commensal and opportunistic zoonotic pathogen, which causes pneumonia and hemorrhagic septicemia in goats and sheep. In clinical cases, necropsies have shown that P. multocida also infects the heart. Therefore, to investigate the immune response of P. multocida-infected hearts, animal infection models were established by two P. multocida strains isolated from goats and sheep. Histopathological studies suggested that mice challenged with serotype D strains presented significant pathological heart damage. Moreover, TLR signaling was significantly activated by serotype A strains but not by serotype D strains. This study is the first to reveal a vital pathway by which the heart recognizes and defends against P. multocida. View this paper
